Jardin d’Acclimatation in Paris has unveiled its latest and most ambitious attraction to date: Le Défi du Dragon, a beautifully themed family ride that blends immersive storytelling, smart engineering, and classic roller coaster excitement.

Officially launched on April 12, 2025, the ride takes the place of the park’s original Dragon Chinois family roller coaster and elevates the experience in every possible way.

On our visit, we were warmly welcomed by Guillaume Tiffreau (Operations Director and Chief Operating Officer) and Camille Dorvault (Communications Manager and Artistic Director), who introduced us to the park’s philosophy and this standout new addition. Their passion for the park’s unique blend of heritage and innovation was evident—and Le Défi du Dragon captures that vision perfectly.

Set in the midst of a lush bamboo forest and modeled after a traditional riverside fishing village in China, the remarkable attraction instantly transports guests into another world. Designed by acclaimed scenographer Thierry Rétif and landscaped by Philippe Deliau, the level of detail in the theming is exceptional. From authentic antiques sourced in Beijing, Shanghai, and Canton, to the carefully restored river and newly planted trees and shrubs, the entire area is rich with atmosphere.

But the real magic lies in the ride experience. Le Défi du Dragon is a custom family roller coaster built by Gerstlauer, offering a launch at 50 km/h straight out of the station into a twisting course of ground-hugging curves and dramatic near-misses. Then comes the highlight: a unique turntable section that rotates the train randomly left or right before launching it once more—either forwards or backwards—into a looped second half of the course. This clever innovation creates four possible ride combinations, encouraging repeat rides and adding an element of surprise.

The attraction hits a sweet spot: it’s thrilling enough to satisfy coaster fans, yet accessible to younger guests (minimum 100 cm if accompanied). It’s also a meaningful upgrade from its predecessor—not just faster and more dynamic, but more deeply integrated into the park’s storytelling ambitions. The ride features two very impressively themed trains, representing red and orange dragons, accommodating 16 riders per train.

With Le Défi du Dragon, Jardin d’Acclimatation reaffirms its position as one of France’s most creative and charming parks. It’s a must-ride for 2025, and a shining example of thoughtful design and clever engineering.

Jardin d’Acclimatation is not just the setting for Le Défi du Dragon—it has a fascinating history stretching back to 1860. The park was opened by Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie as France’s first leisure park.

Over time, it transformed from a scientific “acclimatization” garden and a zoo to today’s beloved playground of rides, nature, and cultural programming. Managed by LVMH and Compagnie des Alpes, the park now welcomes around 2 million visitors a year, featuring 42 attractions, 18 hectares of paths, and around 450 animals.

Notable standouts include:

  • Speed Rockets: A thrilling roller coaster added in 2018.
  • Le Petit Train (1878): France’s first passenger-carrying narrow-gauge railway.
  • La Rivière Enchantée (The Enchanted River, 1926): A scenic boat ride through charming landscapes.
  • La Grande Roue: A 20 m ferris wheel, installed for the 2024 festive season with sweeping views.
  • Le Carrousel Louis Vuitton: A chic carousel introduced in March 2025.

Beyond the rides, the park offers charming experiences like the Sainte-Hilaire educational farm, aviaries, a puppet theatre, scenic playgrounds, and year-round cultural events.

The blend of historical charm, natural beauty, cultural richness and innovative attractions makes Le Jardin d’Acclimatation a unique urban oasis and a perfect destination for families. And now, with Le Défi du Dragon, its legacy continues to evolve in imaginative, exhilarating new directions.
