Familypark, Austria’s largest theme park, has unveiled plans for a major expansion of its Adventure Island (Abenteuerinsel) themed world.

In spring 2026, the park will debut a new area dedicated to the region’s famous winemaking, featuring two new attractions: a family thrill ride and a whimsical ride for younger children.

The project represents a total investment of approximately €4.7 million and replaces the veteran Temple Slide, which was dismantled in late 2025 to make way for the Mediterranean-inspired development.

Rotonda: A High-Speed Spin through the Vines

The centerpiece of the 2026 expansion is Rotonda, a Disk’O Coaster from the renowned Italian manufacturer Zamperla. Marking a first for Austria, this attraction combines the sensations of a roller coaster with a spinning flat ride.

Named after the Italian words for 'rotate' (rotare) and 'wave' (onda), the ride features a massive circular platform seating 40 guests. The platform travels along a wave-shaped track reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h. As the vehicle glides over 'camel humps', it rotates on its own axis, providing riders with a unique feeling of weightlessness.

To fit the park’s storytelling, the ride will be themed around a wine cellar, with the track integrated into a landscape of rolling hills and wine barrels. Rotonda will be accessible to guests over 120 cm tall.

Wilder Winzer: Adventure for the Little Ones

While Rotonda caters to thrill-seekers, Familypark remains committed to its core demographic of young families with Wilder Winzer.

Designed as a 'ride-around' attraction, the Wilder Winzer is a rustic, wood-style transport wagon that carries 24 passengers, moving both forward and backward and ascending to heights of 8 meters while remaining level.

Park management noted that this attraction serves as a replacement for the former turtle carousel, providing a "worthy and even more exciting" experience for toddlers. Children as small as 75 cm can ride with an adult, and those over 105 cm can ride solo.

Strengthening the Regional Identity

Managing Director Filip de Witte emphasised that the new area is designed to celebrate the local culture of the Burgenland region.

"Everything here will revolve around what makes the region so special: viticulture," de Witte explained. "With this new area, we can better fulfill our strategy of offering attractions for different age groups. The Rotonda is a ride experience unique in Austria, which will not only be special for the riders but will also amaze spectators."

Continuing Familypark’s tradition of supporting the local economy, the majority of the construction and development has been awarded to Austrian and regional companies.

Opening Dates

The 2026 season at Familypark began on March 28. While an exact opening date for the new themed area has not been finalised, the park expects both Rotonda and Wilder Winzer to be ready for guests by May 2026.
